In most cases, it is safe to return home after mold remediation is completed and a clearance testing has been performed and remediation has been verified as successful in removal, and the indoor air quality is acceptable for your return. However, this can vary on case by case basis.
If you do not eliminate and fully correct the cause of the mold (moisture intrusion, moisture source), mold will return back once the surface is exposed again to moisture. Many times, mold removal alone will not be enough, instead a full remediation with material removal will be required and elimination of the moisture source in order to prevent the re-growth of mold spores into mold.
If you leave microbial growth untreated, mold will spread to all areas available where favorable conditions exist and nourish the mold organisms. Mold spores are not visible to the naked eye, they get dispersed by the air to areas which were originally no visibly affected materials, attaching themselves to a new food source and waiting until the right conditions are met for reproduction and growth (organic materials, high humidity, water or moisture source, and dark/ lowlight areas).
Everybody’s immune systems may react differently, some individuals are highly sensitive to mold. For these individuals’ exposure to mold can lead to symptoms such as: stuffy nose, wheezing, chronic sinus inflammation, itchy eyes, and skin. Some individuals with pre-existing respiratory illnesses may experience more severe reactions when exposed to mold.
We always start with site inspection and we utilize most advanced tools to detect moisture in materials and help find the source of moisture intrusion as the main factor in mold growth. Furthermore, we provide you with a proper plan of action starting with repairs of water intrusion by elimination of the cause of growth. Drying of structural materials to prevent further growth. Insulation of affected areas to prevent cross-contamination. Installation of proper air filtration HEPA systems to improve indoor air quality. Perform cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting of all affected materials and areas to remove and remediate mold and mold growth. Communicate with industrial hygienists when necessary for pre and post remediation air sampling and testing to ensure mold remediation is performed to industry standard following proper steps and procedures from IICRC standard for Mold Remediation, S-520 – 2015. Making sure all areas and surfaces, materials are free of elevated mold spores and property is safe for re-occupancy.
